Makoto Shinkai has been hailed many in his native Japan as the next Miyazaki. Debuting in the slack 1990’s with a short film called “She and her cat” Makoto then blew everyone away with his self made 30 small short “Voices of a distant Star”.

“Negate if a distant star” or “Hoshi no Koe” as it is titled in Japan is a pretty and comely section of 30 miniature anime. The record tells the myth of two young lovers and the heartache they feel as status and time separates them. The film is absolutely handsome with its intellectual colours. Sad lovers peer up at blue skies while sunshine burst through. There are mecha battles and an extraordinary soundtrack to accompany the film.
Makoto returned last year with his first plump length motion picure “The status promised in our early years”. This ambitious film told the yarn of an alternate Japan, divided into a American controlled south and a communist north. A giant tower on the northern side fascinates two friends and it is a special girl in their life and a promise to contemplate what the tower is that pushed the two friends in their adulthood.

Both films are visually spectacular although I score the 30 small “voices…” to be a more satisfying work.
This collection presents both works in a nice keepsake box and includes the soundtrack to “Voices of a distant star” by composer Tenmon. If you worship shapely, thought-provoking and somewhat introspective anime, this is a must hold.
RECOMMENDED!!
Makoto Shinkai came upon the anime scene with a shrimp anime short called “She and Her Cat” a few years ago and showed promise as a future director with vision. He has delivered with these two films. Voices of a Distant Star, as many know was done on his Mac on a shoestring budget but it doesn’t hold you from becoming complete enthralled with its anecdote of treasure and longing among the tragedies of war. Watching this movie was the first time I have ever had a trudge reach to gape while watching an anime feature. In 2005, The Dwelling Promised in Our Early Days came out and it did not disappoint. The visuals are striking and its tale of friendship and keeping of promises is not be missed, even if you are not an anime fan. I will continue to peep for even better things from this director in the coming years.

SE7EN – Can anything more be said about what a enormous film this is???? Well, now, YES because Novel Line’s fresh Double DVD is a amazing package and a MUST for any fan of the film. The film has once again been remastered from the novel film elements and it has never looked better — even better than the veteran Criterion laserdisc. Colors, shadowings, sound, incompatibility have all been adjusted for optimum do (one of the extras on disc 2 shows the before-and-after on several scenes) . Unprejudiced check out the green lamps in that library scene – WOW! The film is on Disc 1 and there are 4 separate commentary tracks…the most lively one in my idea is Track 2 which discusses the genesis of the project from script, to selling it to a studio and the fight to withhold the current ending. Fincher is always racy, but hearing Andrew Kevin Walker discuss his inspiration for writing the script and the struggles to accept it made is even more titillating. The drawl slow one of the most recent screenplays in years is pure genius. “Extras”-filled Disc 2 features deleted scenes (including the modern opening) …most of which are objective slightly extended scenes from the film (you eye more of “Pride”, etc.) . There is also an alternate chop of the ending with different shots that was test-screened to an audience plus a storyboard of a different ending that was never shot. All of these advance with or without commentary. An analysis of the opening credit sequence offers different angles and commentaries on 3 variants of the sequence. There are detached galleries with commentaries by the photographers. Yes, “Sloth” victim’s decay is included in the photos (unfortunately, not as clearly as it was presented on the Criterion LD) as well as John Doe’s notebooks and lair. There is only one theatrical trailer (where are all the tv spots, etc. that were on the LD????? ) and a short EPK. There are also some DVD-rom features on both discs (script-to-scene, etc.) to round it all out.
Only downside is that a lot of the extras on the Criterion LD are NOT INCLUDED HERE in any design. Although Criterion holds the rights to their recent commentary track (Featuring Fincher, Pitt, Freeman, Steal Bottin, Walker, etc) and some other extras, surely Recent LINE owns the rights to the tv spots and other such promo materials. Where, for instance, is the astronomical gallery of novel artwork and poster concepts that so playfully archaic the number 7 or the sins as the backdrop???? Unique Line created these so why aren’t they included here? The Criterion disc also had out-takes and many other things not included here, so don’t ever toss that disc out! It’s distinct to be essential some day. And with this DVD, which also includes items NOT on the Criterion LD, they combine to design the ultimate “SE7EN” collection.

Although not originating from the bible, the understanding of deadly sins is almost as traditional as Christian doctrine itself. Theologians like 4th century Greek monk Evagrius of Pontus first compiled catalogues of deadly offenses against the divine order, which 6th century pope Gregory the Mammoth consolidated into a list of seven sins, which in turn formed the basis of the works of medieval/renaissance writers like St. Thomas Aquinas (”Summa Theologiae”), Geoffrey Chaucer (”Canterbury Tales”), Christopher Marlowe (”Dr. Faustus”), Edmund Spenser (”The Faerie Queene”) and Dante Alighieri (”Commedia Divina”/”Purgatorio”) . And in times when the ability to read was a privilege rather than a basic skill, the depiction of sin in paintings wasn’t far behind; particularly resulting from the 16th century’s reformulation of church doctrine, the works of artists like Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder brought the horrific results of humankind’s penchant to indulge in vice benefit into general consciousness with surrealistic eloquence, reminding their viewers that no sin goes unseen (Bosch, “The Seven Deadly Sins”) and that its commission leads straight into a hell reigned by homely, grotesque demons and devils whose sole purpose is to torture those fallen into their hands (Bosch, “The Hay-Wagon” and “The Last Judgment;” Bruegel, “The Triumph of Death” and “The Tower of Babel”) .
More recently, the seven deadly sins have been the subject of Stephen Sondheim’s play “Getting Away With Destroy” and a ballet by George Balanchine (”Seven Deadly Sins”) ; and on the silver hide the topic has been addressed almost since the beginning of filmmaking (Cabiria [1914], Intolerance [1916]) . Thus, “Se7en” builds on a solid tradition both in its fill domain and in other art forms, topically as well as in its near, denouncing society’s apathy towards vice and crime. Yet – and although expressly referencing the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, Chaucer and Dante – David Fincher’s movie eschews well-trodden paths and grabs the viewer’s attention from the beginning; and it does so not merely by the depiction of serial killer John Doe’s (Kevin Spacey’s) crimes, which could easily degenerate into a mindless bloodfest that would defeat the movie’s purpose. (Not that there isn’t a handsome fraction of blood and gore on display; both visually and in the characters’ dialogue regarding those details not actually shown; but Fincher uses the crimes’ gross nature to form a sense of stark realism, rather than for shock value alone.) In addition, Doe’s mindset is painstakingly presented by the opening credits’ terrified nature, his “lair”’s apocalyptic makeup and his notebooks, all of which were actually written out (at distinguished expense), and whose compilation is shown underlying the credits. The movie’s atmosphere of unrelenting doom is further underscored by a color arrangement dominated by brown, gray and only subdued hues of other colors, and by the fact that almost every outdoors scene is status in rain. Moreover, although screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker explains on the DVD that the narrative was inspired by his observations in Novel York (and the movie was shot partly there, partly in L.A.), it is spot in a faceless, nameless city, thus emphasizing that its misfortune isn’t a specific set but society generally.

Central to the movie is the dissimilarity between world-weary Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) who, while decrying the rampant occurrence of violence in society, for distinguished of the movie seems to have resigned himself to his inability to do something meaningful about this (and therefore seems to derive apathy for himself, too, until his reluctant final turnaround), and younger Detective Mills (Brad Pitt), who fought for a reassignment to this particular area, perhaps naively expecting his contributions to actually build a difference; only to become a pawn in Doe’s method instead and thus display that, given the accurate trigger, nobody is beyond temptation. As such, Somerset and Mills are not merely another incarnation of the noted old-cop-young-cop pairing. Rather, their characters’ development over the course of the film forces each viewer to question his/her maintain stance towards vice.
Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt perfectly relate the two detectives; while Freeman imbues his Will Somerset with a tranquil dignity, professionalism and learning, muted by profound but not yet wholly irreversible resignation, Pitt’s David Mills is a brash everyman from the suburbs with an undeniable drag of prejudice, a penchant for swiftly judgment and a thorough lack of sophistication, both personally and culturally. Essential are also the appearances of Gwyneth Paltrow (significantly Brad Pitt’s real-life girlfriend at the time) as Mills’s wife Tracy and ex-marine R. Lee Ermey as the police captain. Yet, from his very first appearance onwards, this is entirely Kevin Spacey’s film. Reportedly, Brad Pitt especially fought hard for his casting; and it is indeed hard to imagine “Se7en” with anybody other than the guy who, that same year, also won an Oscar for portraying devilish Keyser Soze in “The Usual Suspects”: No living actor has Spacey’s ability to simultaneously scream spine-chilling villainy, laconic indifference and limitless superiority with merely a few gestures and vocal inflections.
While “Se7en” can certainly claim the “sledgehammer” execute on its viewers sought by its fictional killer, the punishment meted out to Doe’s victims – taking their perceived sins to the indecent – pales in comparison to that awaiting sinners according to medieval teachings. (Inter alia, gluttons would thus be forced to eat vermin, toads and snakes, greed-mongers effect in cauldrons of boiling oil and those guilty of lust smothered in fire and brimstone.) Most serial killers have decidedly more mundane motivations than Doe. And after all, this is only a movie.
Right?
“Sin … engenders vice by repetition of the same acts, [clouding the conscience and corrupting the judgment.] Thus sin tends to reproduce … and reinforce itself, but it cannot waste the legal sense at its root.” – Catechism of the Catholic Church (1994) .

This movie is truthful. As powerful as we would disapprove to have it, but relationships with your parents and your distinguished other is unprejudiced like that with most people. There’s usually always drama With urban people. Not to say that it’s not that blueprint with suburban people, but for some reason we “urban folks” almost always do the news. Anyhow Tyrese did a top-notch job as Jody and I was quite suprised. He potrayed a indolent son, a decietful baby’s daddy and a young man who had somewhat of a desire to do better, unprejudiced caught up in temptation. His mother Addrienne Joi Johnson did a aesthetic job, she looked rather young to be his mom, but isn’t that truly the scheme it is. She didn’t seem very supportive as a mom, but her portion was to give some advice and to stand her ground on having a man in her life played by Ving Rhames. Tyrese main girl Taraji P. Henson did an top-notch job playing her fraction as his baby’s mom and the girl he truly cared for. We as women feel objective like she did when it comes to a man we cherish, we want them to do proper by us and if they dont, we exclaim ourselves. We want them to leave if they cant act factual, but we give them numerous chances to straighten up. This movie has numerous sex scenes, violence and profanity, not for the limited ones it’s truly an adult film. This movies has a noble ending. Check it out!
Singleton’s infantile critique of African American men’s Peter Pan syndrome is amusing, uncreative, and unartistic with minute to go on beyond stock, racist caricatures. While we are hungry for staunch stories about our acquire lives that benefit to gawk our soulwounds and the complexities of urban life, this movie does nothing more than contribute to our exploitation. Singleton treats women as nothing more than directionless victims, shallow, and one dimensional. Our men, on the other hand, are nothing more than sex drive and fists. This is an dejected addition to the pile of crap that the film industry is calling “cutting edge.” The film is without artistry or decent story-telling. And it does nothing to extend a revolutionary plan that is moral HIP HOP.

This movie, directed by Corey Yuen, the master of developing “fun” fight scenes. The movie stars a younger Yuen Biao, Cynthia Rothrock, Karen Sheppard, Pete Cunningham unprejudiced to name a few. The location, predictable, the dialogue whether in English or Cantonese, is often definite and not very clever; but, this movie, judged on its gain terms excel where many of this genre fails. There is a location and the fighting is always in relation to it.

And, it is here, in the fight scenes that one can indulge in martial mayhem! This is a young Rothrock and she is at some of her best (actually, her Hong Kong films far surpass any of her American work) . The fight scene with Karen Sheppard is unbiased unbelievable! There is so litle work of Sheppard on film, that this makes the movie even more of a treat. Of course, Biao is vast and one will savor his fight scene against Pete Cunningham.
These fights are huge and fun and Rothrock and Biao fans will you it.

Yuen Biao stars as a vigilante defense attorney. When all of his witnesses are killed, he looks to rob matters into his contain hands. Cynthia Rothrock stars a mahjong playing, kung fu fighting policewoman, and Melvin Wong stars as the dirty police chief. The record has many illogical things happening, but if you have seen a lot of Hong Kong films, you know they do whatever they have to do to fade onto the next fight scene. Fan Siu Wong has a substantial role as a young punk. He doesn’t regain to do any action, but it is magnificent hard to gain that this is the same kid who only 5 years later would conclude a physique that even Bruce Lee would have marveled at. So to sum the movie up briefly, Biao and Rothrock finally figure out Melvin Wong is the poor guy, and it all leads to a spectacular enact.
The chronicle is not dreadful, but the action is definitely the best thing about this movie. Yuen Biao gives one of his very best physical performances, and Rothrock has a few nice fights including one of the better woman on woman fights of all time against Karen Sheperd. I always adore to view the chain rope in action, and Karen Sheperd seems to be very skilled using it. Peter “Sugarfoot” Cunningham plays an assassin and has my celebrated fight of the movie against Biao. They don’t pull any punches and it is very intense. The final fight is qualified, but then there is a thrilling mosey sequence that I was not expecting at all. Don’t give up on this movie half procedure through if you don’t like it, the last 30 minutes are worth a examine for any fan of action cinema.
3.5/5
Picture and sound quality are VERY marvelous, and huge thanks to Dragon Dynasty for including the modern Cantonese mono track.
Special features are as edifying as it gets. The alternate ending is animated, the commentary from Bey Logan is filled with righteous information, and the interviews are worth the imprint of the DVD alone. 18 minutes with Peter Cunningham, 17 with Yuen Biao, and 13 with Rothrock. All the interviews are so beneficial, I can’t name a celebrated. There is no method I could go over all the broad things that are brought up, but here is a shrimp taste of Rothrock’s interview- “Yuen Kwai (the director) was a lot tougher on me than Sammo Hung. I would command him I don’t believe I can do this and he would say yes you can, practice here for 2 hours.”

These episodes are all for the most piece moving and a lot of them are fan favorites. The stakes really salvage raised as everyone on the planet is establish in immediate jeopardy soon after followed by the possible destruction of the planet earth itself. The final Kid Buu episodes are spacious and acquire the entire existence of life in the universe being threatened ratcheting everything up to it’s highest possible levels. The final episodes should be truly beautiful for fans to rewatch or experience for their first time.
I’ve said before that I indulge in how these sets were made with an overall theme across the nine that line up well and seek genuine together on a shelf. A well made booklet comes in each of these sets containing brief character bios and episode descriptions. The video is always well restored and in superb condition, presented as Widescreen 16:9 Aspect Ratio. The audio is astronomical with three different options:
American English Express Track with American Music
American Express Track with the Novel Japanese Music
Original Japanese Squawk Track with the Current Japanese Music.
The only extras on these sets have been trailer’s for other Funimation productions and textless opening theme and ending credits.
These episodes are not honest the final saga to the Dragon Ball Z series but also to the Dragon Ball series that began it all. The storylines here aren’t impartial fat of the science fiction and hard hitting fights Dragon Ball Z was known for but also the elements of magic, fantasy and off beat humor that Dragon Ball was known for. Looking at these episodes now, they are the perfect ending to such an engaging series that artfully managed to constantly escalate things through a seemingly natural course of events. After these episodes it seems hard to imagine more legend storylines for these particular character’s than what we’re given here.
This final state is bulky with equal amounts of the fighting fans request as well as the elements of humor and fantasy that construct this series so loved, fusing the two perfectly. Akira Toriyama ended his long running chronicle fittingly and satisfactorily for fans with these sagas all ending with a final nod towards the Goku we were introduced to scheme aid at the open of Dragon Ball, a Goku that looks at everything as a challenge and adventure.
I can’t wait until this location is released in May, thanks for your time.

Finally Funimations resolve to be nice to us by releasing another Season Region and including all the remaining episodes of DBZ.
I serene remember A couple years benefit, when I spent almost $50 dollars unbiased for the 5 DVD Location that only included the Kid Buu saga, Not only were the Broken-down DVD’s expensive and almost impossible to glean, there were also a total set waster. Season nine place is A must have! Not only is it cheaper, It’s a non-stop fierce action point to, that never stops to occupy it up to the next level, not even to the every Raze. (It also helps that the size of the Status doesn’t recall up a lot of room like the Pervious 1999-2003 Sets.)
So, finally having the Comic Guys at FUNImations releasing very easy to rep Season Sets at $30 impress range, manufacture me want to slap my self for even attempting to pick up over 80 DVD’s of DBZ.

William Devane was astounding in this movie, as usual! The movie has it all…drama, intrigue, excitement, tears, humor, romance, patrioticsm and the Christmas Spirit! Although a slight predictable, it is tranquil a fantastic movie the entire family can peer! It isn’t often you peek a movie that leaves you with a favorable feeling in your heart!!!! This is one of those movies! A mammoth movie to spy anytime, not impartial at Christmas! A improbable, thought-provoking movie for those who have a lost a loved one in the war!
The “Holidays” seem to be synonmous with “family”. For this family, there are no more holidays because their son was killed in the Gulf War. You don’t have to have lost a loved one to understand the emotions in this memoir. There’s only a few characters but they play their parts superbly. My celebrated Christmas movie.

After reaching adulthood, a family Thanksgiving celebration became problematic as I don’t assume turkey (or the ham alternative) a festive dish. I’m not hard pressed to reflect of a better method to employ my time – such as going out for a burger and a movie. WHAT’S COOKING only reinforces my curmudgeonly attitude, but also left me with a smile.

This film has a cast of thousands. Let’s honest say that it involves four American families of varied background – Jewish, Dim, Vietnamese, Mexican Latino – gathering for the Turkey Day ritual. Each has a festering dysfunction.
Ruth and Herb Seelig (Lainie Kazan and Maury Chaykin) welcome their daughter Rachel (Kyra Sedgwick) home for the holiday. Rachel brings her lesbian lover Carla (Julianna Margulies), great to Mom and Dad’s discomfiture. Additional relatives, not yet clued in, are scheduled to tumble by.

Trin and Duc Nguyen (Joan Chen and François Chau) have impartial had #2 son ejected from school. If that isn’t enough, Trin has found a condom among #1 daughter’s possessions. And #1 son isn’t bothering to back the gala affair at all, but is secretly going to the home of his Latino girlfriend, the Avilas.
Mrs. Elizabeth Avila (Mercedes Ruehl) is separated from her husband Javier (Victor Rivers) since he had a tempestuous affair with her cousin. Unbeknownst to Elizabeth, son Tony (Douglas Spain) has invited Papa over for the holiday meal as he has nowhere else to go. Unbeknownst to Tony, Mom has her gain bombshell to plunge. And, of course, the Avila daughter, Sofia (Maria Carmen), has invited her non-Latino boyfriend.
In the meantime, Audrey Williams (Alfre Woodard) must both cook and effect nice with her overly distinguished mother-in-law, Grace (Ann Weldon), while the former’s husband, Ronald (Dennis Haysbert), referees. The area of the couple’s marriage is tense, and their teenage son, Michael (Eric George), isn’t expected to appear for unstated reasons, which perhaps is objective as well as Ronald’s approval rating of his boy is at an all-time grievous.
As the status evolves, the determined conflict in each of these households is revealed as only the tip of the iceberg.
Each of these culturally different families prepares its enjoy approved side dishes to accompany the de rigueur bird. Mighty shroud time is dedicated to food preparation, and it’s a joy to recognize. My wife and I had a difficult time deciding which meal we’d want to break. We ultimately decided on the Nguyen feast despite a considerable culinary malfunction. KFC anyone?
Director Gurinder Chadha, and Indian woman born in Africa who grew up in London and married a Japanese-American, deftly escalates the tension in each group such that the dysfunction at each Thanksgiving table spirals out of control at the same rate, culminating in an unexpected bridge between the cultures.
WHAT’S COOKING is clever and enormously sharp, as long as it doesn’t happen to you. The fact that such or similar situations are likely commonplace in America’s melting pot makes the film all the more reflective of a shared humanity. Kudos to Ms. Chadha for a thoroughly consuming movie equal to, if not better than, MY Grand Chunky GREEK WEDDING.
For a movie I never heard of(being in the theaters), this was a surprisingly decent movie. The movie basically follows four families (a Hispanic family, Vietnamese family, African-American family and a Jewish family) as they prepare Thanksgiving dinner. Overall, it is a nice family movie despite the positive dysfunction in each family (which is lovely realistic I affirm) .

Among the “issues” addressed in this movie: lesbian relationships, marital infidelity, the generation gap between parents and children, single parent homes, and gun violence.
The ending of the movie surprisingly ties everything together into a nice bow but you smooth feel at the ruin of the movie like, “What a wacky world we live in.”
Overall, the movie itself is a nice scrutinize, marvelous of an afternoon rental viewing. It’s definitely not a extinguish of money.

Among the special DVD features in this film are interviews and commentaries from cast and crew members on a WIDE VARIETY OF TOPICS. The interviews are so-so. They’re not worth the imprint of admission, but it’s an “okay” bonus. The special feature in the DVD fraction I really liked were the recipes for some of the delightful dishes served up in some of the families’ Thanksgiving dinners. That’s a substantial DVD bonus.
Here’s my rundown:
Great: The recipes in the DVD special features
Good: The overall movie itself (storyline, acting, etc) .
Okay: The DVD bonus interviews, commentaries, etc
Bad: The pure dysfunction…but it’s unfortunately all too accurate in our society…
Overall, a nice anguish for the cast and crew and the DVD makers.

The Flesh and the Fiends is a thoroughly delectable apprehension thriller. With the impeccable Peter Cushing, sporting a disturbingly droopy left eyelid, playing the misguided Dr. Knox, Donald Pleasance giving an awe-inspiring performance as half of the murdering duo of Burke and Hare, and plenty of illegal traffic in unimaginative bodies, this movie can hardly do less than succeed admirably. Dr. Knox is an instructor at a medical school in Edinburgh during the 1820s. The number of bodies available for dissection by his students, small to the bodies of executed criminals, is worthy too uncouth to satisfy him, so he turns to alternative means of acquiring specimens for see. He has no scrape paying grave robbers for corpses, so long as they are unusual enough to be useful; in fact, he openly admits the rotten solicitation of corpses, powerful to the fear of the leading surgeons in town. Eventually, two shiftless vagabonds by the name of Burke and Hare reach to realize that traffic in corpses offers them an recent economic opportunity. When a lodger in Burke’s apartment house passes away, he and Hare box her up and trade her in for several guineas. Since the doctor wants the freshest corpses possible, they station out to give him what he wants by murdering individuals and bringing them in almost immediately. Things initiate to go obnoxious when the pair murders the sweetheart of one of Dr. Knox’s students, yet Knox remains steadfast in his dealings with the loathsome creatures. Cancel will out, of course, and Knox must eventually face the music for his actions. This movie, while very trustworthy, is by no means perfect. June Laverick gets second billing in her role as Knox’s niece, yet her character really serves no purpose at all in the tale. Knox’s assistant, beset early on with doubts and fears over Knox’s acceptance of suspicious corpses, is never fleshed out and ends up behaving somewhat strangely in my thought. Most of all, the ending (not the loyal climax, but the ending itself) is unbiased dull unique and makes tiny sense to me in the context of the fable.
Peter Cushing is always astonishing, but the actual star of this movie is Donald Pleasance. Even though I knew the future Dr. Loomis from Halloween was in the movie, I quite frankly did not actually behold him initially. His portrayal of Hare is simply wonderful. His aloof, assured manner is rarely breached, even in the midst of potential effort, and his amusing manner of explaining his dastardly activities makes of him one of the best truly tainted villains I have ever encountered. He is almost well-behaved of convincing anyone, especially his partner, that killing each victim is actually a kindness, for that person will surely be of more expend on a dissecting table than he/she is in life. It’s thrilling to spy this master criminal mind at work.
The Flesh and the Fiends has been unduly neglected over the years and has itself suffered the execrable wounds of the dissection table of the censors. It was quite graphic for its time (1959) : one of the first scenes features a pale corpse being dragged out of a grave by its head, then the murders of Hare and Burke are shown more realistically than one might request from a film of this particular era. Its bitingly realistic presentation of early 18th century life, complete with rowdy barrooms and dejected living quarters, along with its moments of unusually graphic violence, give the film a first-rate believability factor. In fact, the basic account of Burke and Hare is indeed a moral one, which makes the scare qualities of this film even more affective than they already are.

For years, this movie has only been available in edited build, bearing the title of Mania in the U.S.; it has also been pawned off with the titles The Fiendish Ghouls as well as The Psycho Killers. The complete, 97-minute version of the movie is the one you want, so don’t earn a copy of Mania and speak yourself six minutes of delightfully horrific entertainment. Despite the uncommon ending, this movie ranks among the best alarm films of the 1950s and 1960s and stands as powerful, distinguished more than a mere precursor for the later Hammer films starring the inimitable Peter Cushing.
Although my suitable field of interest remains the calm film (gaze my other reviews), I unprejudiced cannot pass up the opportunity to say something about this movie which has been one of my favorites for many years. I first saw it on television serve in the 1960’s and it has been with me ever since. Despite the lurid title and packaging THE FLESH AND THE FIENDS is not really a alarm film. It is a historical drama with horrific overtones. The movie is based on the lives of Burke and Hare, graverobbers in 1828 Edinburgh, who began to slay people in order to supply the local medical school with original corpses to dissect.

Robert Louis Stevenson based his record THE BODY SNATCHER (which was made into a film in 1943 by Val Lewton starring Boris Karloff) on their exploits. Filmmakers Robert Baker and Monty Berman mounted this project in 1959 hoping to cash in on the burgeoning fright divulge created by Hammer Films. They hired Peter Cushing plus a host of character actors to bring the narrative to life. Special mention should be made of the incandescent performances given by George Rose as Burke and Donald Pleasance as Hare. It is really their movie. The film also features Billie Whitelaw in a vivid early role. Like PSYCHO which it predates, THE FLESH AND THE FIENDS. is also a psychological thriller (it was called MANIA in the U.S.) . It even eliminates its young protagonists halfway through the film. I wonder if Hitchcock was familiar with it?
John Gilling, the director and co-writer, would fade on to Hammer after the success of this film where he would invent THE REPTILE and THE PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES. FLESH is well acted, tightly directed, and in the Continental version (also available on this DVD) extremely heroic in its exercise of nudity. An influential film that was ahead of its time, it has only been available in atrocious public domain copies up until now. Thanks to Image Entertainment for making it available at last in a glowing print made from the camera negative. As the film approaches its 50th anniversary, the power of its brutal imagery has not diminished.

Photographer Jim Brandenburg takes you on his personal photographic creep that re-awakened his spirit and worship of his craft after a burn out shooting for National Geographic magazine. Lively music from Michael Monroe accompanies the blooming scenery and images from the northwoods of Minnesota. Jim reflects on some of his original experiences while capturing some of the images on his swagger. A must for photographers or anyone eager in wildlife and nature. Highly recommended.
I saw this on PBS last night; when I read the program description, I belief it would be tiresome – photos of a lake? I was later ecstatic nothing was on Gash at Night, as this was an astounding documentary. The photographs were stunningly beautiful; the video of the photographer at work was extraordinary. Several of the photographs featured brought tears to my eyes. He mentions some of the technical aspects keen in the photos, and the sheer challenge of limiting himself to taking impartial one exposure per day. I opinion on adding this and the book Chased By The Light to my collection.
